Mr. Sandman
Olive Oil–Washed Cognac · Thyme Grappa · Amontillado Sherry · Lemon · Rosemary Honey · Pear Nectar · Aquafaba · Cardamom Bitters
Served in a coupe glass. Rosemary sprig. Lovely foam.
Another drink that once I read the ingredients, it was a must-order. First off, if I see olive oil, I’m there. Second off, my dad once shared an amazing story with me that I was reminded of with this drink.
My grandpa, who I sadly never got to meet, was a huge grappa fan. He created a club of sorts for the Italian brandy. He was the founder of “The Order of The Brotherhood of The Grappa’s.” A social club that would eat dinner and drink grappa. In order to join The Order, you would need to drink 2 Martinis before dinner, a bottle of wine with dinner, and have 5 shots of grappa after dinner.
A story like this makes me know I would have loved and been great friends with my grandpa, as this order is exactly my idea of fun.
Now for the drink, it was absolutely fantastic. The bartenders are able to make every single ingredient shine. You often lose the primary flavor profile of certain ingredients in a cocktail, not always in a bad way. But here with Mr. Sandman, you’re taken on a rollercoaster of flavors where each ingredient pokes its head.
Aromatic, boozy, sweet, herbal, fruity... simply delicious. Certainly one of my favorite cocktails I have ever had.
