Face to Vase

Ingredients

Gin · Eucalyptus · Sake · Mango · Coriander

The profile

Nearly clear, sphere ice, flower garnish.

My thoughts

This drink is literally poured from a vase. Incredibly botanical, with a bit of herbal from the coriander and sweetness from the mango to balance. The sake is a great pair with the gin. Very refreshing, and quite an easy drink. Of course, it’s not really pushing the envelope, but it tasted fantastic.

Quack Quack

Ingredients

Whisky · Smoked Duck Fat · Sweet Potato · Balsamic · Soda

The profile

Presented as a dark beer with a cute duck garnish.

My thoughts

No, this is not a beer! How cool of a presentation is this? The bartender told me the idea was that the look and taste closely resembled a dark beer. I can say, they nailed it. Oh, and the duck garnish is completely edible.

Now I must say, none of the ingredients, bar whisky, are really my jam. I keep trying to like duck, but I just don’t... and I am not a soda-in-cocktails fan. With that said, it was such a unique cocktail that I had to give it a go. And I’m glad I did, because the execution was fantastic.

The Space

Alice was the first bar I visited in Seoul, and what an introduction. I think if you needed a written and visual representation to explain what a world-ranked bar looks like, it would be Alice. With a heavy whimsical theme, you feel transported out of Seoul and into a book.

The main room has a small bar top, with mostly 2-person tables made up of velvet-cushioned seats. Some small, somewhat private rooms flank either side for larger groups.

The look of their menu might just be my favorite. It’s one large booklet where each drink is designed as a playing card. Each playing card is plotted on a chart that corresponds to the drink’s character: Light/Strong, Sweet/Bitter.

The presentation of their drinks is fantastic, really adding to the immersion you feel.

Also—a whole basket of complimentary snacks to choose from.

Extras

Once sat, I was presented with a lovely welcome drink. Quite a large drink for a welcome drink, I must add. You know you are at an established, classy bar when you are given a welcome drink. So bonus points for that.

I believe it was raspberry-flavored, something sweet, of course, as they need to cater to a majority of palates.
