Bánh Mì

Ingredients

Vodka · Cilantro · Cucumber · Lime · Green Chilli

The profile

Cilantro just hit a grand slam on your ass

My thoughts

Yeah, if you have that trait that makes cilantro taste like soap, stay far away from this drink. Now I'm not sure if there was any meat infusion or component, as I picked up on a subtle meaty scent but did not taste one. The other scent I got was CILANTRO. Did you see the cilantro garnish?

The pickled vegetable flavor of a bánh mì comes through very nicely, and they accurately got the green chilli spice from the sandwich, which differs from the jalapeño or habanero spice you find in most spicy drinks.

Unfortunately, I tasted no bread. I think if they found a way to add that to the drink, it would be quite special. With that said, I think it's hard to create a more accurate representation of a bánh mì in liquid form, and it was quite enjoyable.

Kẹo Đậu Phộng
“the smell and taste give me Skrewball”

Kẹo Đậu Phộng

Ingredients

Peanut-Infused Whiskey · Caramel Syrup · Lemon · Egg White

The profile

Upscale presentation, lovely ombre. Charred peanut brittle garnish

My thoughts

The look gives me black-tie event hosted in an art gallery; the smell and taste give me Skrewball. Now, that's not an inherent dig. I like Skrewball enough, and I did order a drink with peanut-infused whiskey haha. I'm just more surprised, based on the ingredients, that that is how it was presented.

It's pretty much a whiskey sour, which I'm totally here for. The menu description said it would taste like peanut soup (never had that, but assumed it was Vietnamese), and maybe I just don't have the palate to pick that distinction up.

Overall, a solid cocktail, but nothing that is changing the game.

The Space

How freaking fun is this bar? A speakeasy behind a bánh mì cart. Absolute perfection. I mean, look at the image and tell me if you would have any idea walking past that this was a bar.

As a result of its uniqueness, it is very trendy on Instagram and, as a result, was filled with all but one tourist. Another really intimate bar, I went on a Saturday, and by 9:30pm it was full.

I'm a sucker for a hidden bar, and I'm always amazed at how far the concept stretches, being that speakeasies are a uniquely American thing.

Extras

Here I am with the aforementioned one local in the bar, who kindly let me call him Michael as I was struggling to pronounce his Vietnamese name. Michael had incredibly impressive English skills, and we chatted for hours—one of my favorite bar interactions I’ve ever had.

A few years younger than me, we just chatted about life. Our upbringing, politics, girls, sports, alcohol—you name it. We share a very similar life philosophy, and it was awesome to connect with a stranger on such a deep level. And this is why we love bars—a third space for human connection.

As I took a strong liking to Michael, I wanted to do something special to remember the moment. I stared up at their back bar and ordered for us the most expensive whiskey they had, Macallan 12. Michael was incredibly appreciative of the gesture, which I was happy to provide, being that the shot cost just $10.

It felt somewhat divine that our paths crossed. All the best, Michael.

A memorable moment at United Bar
My Verdict

8 / 10Atmosphere
