Le Parfum
“This drink is aromatic as fuck.”

Le Parfum

Ingredients

Gin · St-Germain · Jasmine · Cordial de Fleur · Pickled Elderflower · Ylang-Ylang

The profile

A flower patch in the middle of a perfume store.

My thoughts

In a good way, my first sip was what I would imagine it would taste like to lick the arm of a college freshman on her first night out. To put it in plain English, this drink is aromatic as fuck.

I absolutely love elderflower. Both as a scent and a taste. An incredibly popular ingredient in cocktails, but this drink takes it to another level.

The pickled elderflower gives the drink a subtle acidity that gives needed complexion to the onslaught of floral. I feel this is a polarizing drink, but one I am in support of.

Tarte Tatin
“As far as dessert drinks go, this one takes the cake for me.”

Tarte Tatin

Ingredients

Calvados Christian Drouin · Oloroso Sherry · Brown Butter · Caramel · Rectified Apple Juice · Tonka Bean · Vanilla Mousse

The profile

Unique candle-esque glass. Light foam, sweet aroma.

My thoughts

So I learned that Tarte Tatin is a French apple pastry. And this drink is set to replicate that. Having never tasted the pastry, I find it odd to say, but they did a fantastic job at nailing the flavor profile. (I mean, how different can it be from an American apple tart/apple fritter?)

I am not one for dessert drinks, but this intrigued me. And as far as dessert drinks go, this one takes the cake for me. (Pun somewhat intended.)

Vanilla, apple, brown butter... I mean, c’mon, those just work so well together. The drink uses high-end brandy and sherry as well, which I think is a necessity in this drink’s success.

Really creative, I love the ties to France, and the execution was superb.

The Space

Danico sits behind Daroco in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. Somewhat odd to find late at night when the restaurant is closed. Because technically it isn’t a speakeasy... but you can’t just walk in.

Incredibly dark and small, we waited a few minutes for a table to open up as the place was completely full. Now, possibly my experience was hindered by the fact I wasn’t at the bar top, nor spoke French. My friend, who does speak French, did all the ordering with the waiter.

The positives were the music was very good and I really liked the theme of the menu. Other than that, the space somewhat felt like a hotel lobby bar. Nothing stood out in terms of the theme or furniture.

For a ranked bar, I was considerably let down by the atmosphere. The drinks were great, but again, I don’t know if I personally felt them worth the ranking.

That said, it is absolutely a top bar and one to visit if you are in Paris.

My Verdict
7.4 / 10Taste
5.4 / 10Atmosphere

Taste reflects what I drank. Atmosphere reflects the bar experience.
